Spartans finally take down Denfeld

On Wednesday night the Spartans headed over the bridge for the "border battle" with the Hunters of Duluth Denfeld.  It was the first Lake Superior Conference match of this season.  The matchup with Denfeld always seems to be intense and physical, and this night was no different.  In the opening half the Spartans struck first when junior forward Spencer Kidd attacked the Hunters defense and the ball deflected to senior forward Evan Strauch.  Strauch buried the opportunity for his first ever varsity goal and the early 1-0 lead.

In the second half, Superior stepped up their game and for the most part kept control of possession.  Once again it was Strauch making some noise on a breakaway, and the Denfeld defense had no option but to foul.  Spencer Kidd finished the ensuing penalty kick for a 2-0 lead with 31 minutes to play.  But the Hunters were not done yet.  A few missed opportunities by Superior were followed by a great run down the line from a Denfeld winger, who finished nicely to cut the lead in half with 14 minutes to play.  The Spartans lost a little control for a few minutes but after settling down held on to close out the game and win 2-1.

Superior improves to 2-1 on the season and begins conference play at 1-0.  Kidd continued his scoring streak, having found the back of the net in all three games for a team leading 5 goals on the season.  This was the Spartans first victory over Denfeld in 10 years.  Stat of the night - the last three boys soccer victories for Superior over Duluth Denfeld:

2-1 win at Denfeld in 2025

2-1 win at Denfeld 2015

2-1 win at Denfeld in 2005

Tonight the captains named Evan Strauch the man of the match.  The JV squad fell to Denfeld earlier in the night by a score of 2-0 to drop their record to 2-1.  Both Spartans teams head to Hibbing on Thursday night for another conference matchup with the Bluejackets.  Tuesday's games with Rice Lake were postponed due to the weather and rescheduled for Monday, October 6th.  Thanks for checking out our blog - and way to go Spartans!!!
